Man Killed In Crash With Lex PD Cruiser

By Associated Press

Lexington, KY – Lexington police are investigating a fatal crash that occurred early Sunday when a police cruiser slammed into a car at an intersection.

Investigators say the officer was heading north in his cruiser when a Toyota Corolla going west entered the intersection. The officer, Anthony Guidulgli, tried to swerve to avoid the vehicle and hit the driver-side door.

The driver, who was from Versailles, was pronounced dead on arrival at University of Kentucky Hospital. Police have not released his name.

Guidugli was treated for a minor ankle injury, The Lexington Herald-Leader reported. Lexington Police Lt. Doug Pape says investigators have not determined if the Corolla ran the stop sign or came to a complete stop, but he says the car did not yield the right of way to the cruiser.

Police say Guidugli was traveling between 40 and 45 miles per hour at the time of the crash. He was not wearing a seat belt.

The officer being unbuckled was "not a contributing factor in this collision, (but) it is of concern to us and appropriate action will be taken upon completion of this investigation," Lexington police said in a news release.

Pape said speed and alcohol were not factors in the crash; toxicology results on both drivers are pending.
