Major Rupp Arena Announcement Set For Wednesday
LEXINGTON, Ky. - A major announcement on the future of the Rupp Arena and Lexington Convention Center remodeling project is expected Wednesday.
Governor Steve Beshear and Mayor Jim Gray are set to announce the next step in the city’s plans to remake the Rupp Arena area. A selection committee has been meeting with possible designers for the project, which could see the Lexington Convention Center separated from Rupp though likely with the main entrance remaining on Main Street.
Business Lexington is reporting that an RFP, or Request for Proposals, has been put out, offering naming rights to the convention center. The request describes the project as a “renovation and expansion of the Lexington Convention Center” that will be implemented” in phases to accommodate existing planned events.”
Another plan looks to bring the Town Branch Creek back to the surface in a park that would be situated behind the arena where the Cox Street parking lot is currently located.
