Louisville Police To Debut Body Cameras In June

Police in Louisville have announced plans to install body cameras on patrol officers next month, but activists who petitioned for the devices are questioning why they will be used in predominantly white neighborhoods first.

Now that the department is moving ahead with body cameras, there are more than a few questions officials and residents will have to answer.

"Let's say you've got a lot of valuables that you possess. If we videotape that, is that something you want to go on YouTube tomorrow?" Jeffersontown Police Chief Rick Sanders asked during panel covered by WLKY-TV Wednesday.

"What happens to all these body cameras, this footage that is taken every day? How long is it maintained? Who makes the decision on when to delete it?" Attorney Jon Fleischaker, who represents many local media, added.

One other concern raised in recent days comes from local activists, who argue the program should start in mostly minority neighborhoods.

"I think most citizens, particularly in communities of color, are going to welcome cameras, body cameras, on police officers," Brian Herring said.

About 100 officers in the Fifth Division will be equipped with the cameras in June. The division includes the predominantly white neighborhoods of Highlands and Clifton. Police Chief Steve Conrad says the Fifth Division was selected because it's active, but not the most active division. The program will eventually expand to all officers.

Meanwhile, body cameras are still in the pilot phase in Lexington. Police spokesperson Sherelle Roberts tells WUKY there is no timeline yet for when the program will launch.

Josh James fell in love with college radio at Western Kentucky University's student station, New Rock 92 (now Revolution 91.7). After working as a DJ and program director, he knew he wanted to come home to Lexington and try his hand in public radio.
