Muslim leaders in Louisville are speaking out against the Islamic militant organization ISIS, which now controls large portions of Iraq and Syria.
The religious leaders gathered in Louisville Monday to denounce the actions of ISIS, which has engaged in a campaign of brutal violence against populations that refuse to convert to its strict interpretation of Islamic law.
"I feel like our religion, Islamic faith has been hijacked once more. This happened on Sept. 11 and this is another one of those. We in the Islamic community, we need to stand up against them," Haleh Karimi with Independent Muslims of Louisville said.
Between 5,000 and 7,000 Muslims are estimated to attend mosques in the Louisville region, according to WDRB-TV.
A $1.5M dollar mosque – Lexington’s first – is under construction on Russell Cave Road.
