Local Music Monday: Warren Byrom

WUKY's DeBraun Thomas profiles multi-instrumentalist Warren Byrom.

Warren Byrom is a native of Danville who moved to Lexington in 1990. Byrom was exposed to music early as his parents had a very diverse record collection ranging from the Beatles to Neil Sedaka to the sounds of the Civil War. Byrom says he first fell in love playing music on his family’s Spinet Piano.

“I would play pretty much what I now realize is like ambient music [laughs] when I was a little kid, so I think it was just sort of just like, a therapy for uh, I don’t wanna say a maladjustment, but you know I didn’t feel all that comfortable in the world as a kid and I could hone out little melodies on the keyboard and playing that piano was my earliest introduction to actually engaging in it.”

Byrom is multi-instrumentalist with his main instruments being guitar and trumpet. Byrom is considered by many to be one of the best songwriters in Lexington. Having diverse talents is something he says when writing songs forces him to throw everything out the window and start from scratch.

“Like the way I’ll work with songs I’ll be like ‘Oh, I have to drop the technical aspect of guitar playing or trumpet playing,’ so with writing songs I try to access something else, you know, some other side of my brain, it is kind of a juggle, sometimes I can just pick up the guitar and start seeing almost what the guitar is wanting to do, like that part of my brain that has geeked out on it for so many years, like see what kinda conversation they start havin.”

Byrom has been part of the local music scene for over 2 decades and in that time has been part of a few different long standing bands in Lexington. It wasn’t until his first solo record came out in 2011 that he started is solo group Warren Byrom and the Fabled Canelands. He recently has gone back into the studio to work on a record to be released next year. Byrom decided to record the album live in the studio and is something he says that he is adapting to.

“Originally the summer before last with the idea of doing it live and it’s just not the way I work, you know I’ll usually, I’ll have to like record stuff and kinda sit on it a while and come back to it and listen and obviously the stuff that we recorded hasn’t changed, so I guess it’s more about checkin in with how I’ve changed, that seems to be part of a process.”

Warren Byrom performs with Small Batch, The Swells, & The Big Maracas in addition to The Fabled Canelands. Warren Byrom & The Fabled Canelands will be performing at Cosmic Charlie’s on November 28th.
