Lexington city leaders have their eye on downtown’s Central Library as a potential location for city hall. The East Main Street property is only the latest spot to be considered in a decades-long hunt for a new home.
In a joint statement Tuesday, Executive Director of the Lexington Public Library Ann Hammond and Lexington Chief Administrative Officer Sally Hamilton noted both have outgrown their current spaces and the city is considering purchasing the library.
The release notes the process is only in the beginning stages, as the city has just started advertising for a consultant to study the feasibility of moving the government center to the new location. The Urban County Council expects a final report by late November.
Hammond tells the Herald-Leader that the library has no plans to leave the downtown area and will search for a new home if the city moves forward. Most recently, the city had explored five different locations, including a brand new facility to be incorporated into the long dormant CentrePointe project, but a deal was not reached with developers.
