Lextran Approves Series of Route Changes

Lextran’s board of directors approved a series of changes to its routes Wednesday.

The changes, which have been in the works since September, are varied, but center around improving efficiency and reducing costs.  Highlights include a bi-directional Sunday service for routes 1-13, increased hours of service on the red mile, and the revisions of routes 21,31, and 16.  While several of these changes were appreciated by Lextran customers, others, such as suspension of the Blue and Green Colt Trolley routes, received a more mixed response.  Rider Doug Cichon says that route appeared to have lost its utility.

“It sounds like it used to be very useful when it was a small route, but then people loved it and they kept expanding it until it took so long to circle around that nobody really used it anymore,” he said.

There was also controversy over consolidating routes 20 and 17, which opponents said cut off service to Masterson Station.  Ultimately, the board postponed action on those routes, and said it would also take a look at providing service around the local jail.  Rider Sarah Brown was pleased with the this outcome.

"I was glad to hear the board being concerned about the people who visit the jail and that schedule, and I hope they will incorporate the jail into one of the routes soon," she said.

The changes are expected to save Lextran approximately $510,000 in operating costs, and the board expects  to begin implementing them in January.
