Lexington resident are remembering the 9/11 terrorist attacks with a variety of events across town Thursday.

A number of memorials have been become solemn traditions, but each year the anniversary begins downtown, where city fire fighters pay their respects in a ceremony in Phoenix Park.

Lexington fire chief Keith Jackson says, while the annual remembrances are a necessary reminder, the events of September 11, 2001 are planted in the back of firefighters’ minds every day.

"One thing that I or any person across the country can say is that you remember what you were doing at that time," Jackson says. "So the significance of our fellow brothers and sister who gave their lives on that day plays a role in how we conduct ourselves on a daily basis."

Back on the University of Kentucky campus, there's a different kind of memorial underway as university cadets read the names of 9/11 victims aloud, one by one. Small American flags line the walkways on the campus’ main lawn.

The last reminder... all flags across the state will remain at half-staff until sunset.
