Lexington YMCA to Distribute School Supplies
LEXINGTON, Ky--- This Saturday, the YMCA of Central Kentucky will once again host its annual Back to School Rally.
Working with Kits for Kidz, a Chicago, IL based nonprofit, volunteers will distribute about 8000 backpacks of school supplies at 18 locations around the city, including parks and churches. By giving out supplies, the YMCA hopes to give every child a chance to succeed in school. Spokeswoman Julie Balog says it will also help low-income families.
“It’s hard to finish your homework if you don’t have the right supplies. As a parent, I can’t imagine what it would be like to have to choose, “do I pay this bill or do I get school supplies?” So what we’re trying to do is bridge that gap so that those kids who might not have the opportunity to buy the right school supplies will be able to. We want to give them every reason to succeed in school,” she said.
While the primary focus of the rally is children, Balog says the YMCA has worked to make it engaging for the whole family.
“Registration is from 9 to 11, and then we distribute the supplies at noon. So if children come with a parent or guardian, they can sign up to get their backpack, and then once the registration is complete, there’s lots of fun things to do. There’s booths, there’s games, there’ll be inflatables, and you can just enjoy a morning out at the park, and you can get your backpack at noon," she says.
Supplies are organized by grade level, ranging from Elementary to High School, and students will need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian to receive a backpack.
