The mail processing plant on Nandino Blvd. in Lexington is scheduled to move to Louisville and Knoxville, Tennessee in 2015.
The processing center is among 82 facilities nationwide that are planned for consolidation. Postal service spokesman David Walton told the Lexington Herald-Leader about 290 Lexington employees would be affected.
The postal service says the consolidations will begin in early January and should be finished by fall 2015.
The processing and distribution center in Paducah is also scheduled to be closed next year. Paducah's processing would be done in Evansville, Indiana.
After the 82 facilities are shuttered, the postal service estimates that 44 percent of its first-class mail will be delivered in three days; 35 percent would be delivered in two days; and 20 percent would be delivered overnight.
