Lexington Launches New Recycling Awareness Campaign

By WUKY Staff

Lexington, KY – The city of Lexington is launching a public awareness campaign to boost recycling. A recent county-wide survey reveals that 14% of us don't recycle anything at all.

Environmental Policy Outreach Director, Mark York says part of the effort includes informing people of how easy and convenient it is to recycle.

"14% said, you know what, it's too much work. I have to separate things and it's too much of a hassle. Well, last year one of the improvements we made in our recycling program is that we went to the single stream which means you no longer have to separate your glass from your other recyclable materials in Lexington. So we hope that that's a little bit more efficient for our customers."

Project leaders were at Whitaker Bank Ballpark Wednesday to kick off the campaign. They rolled out three new waste management trucks featuring the images of local personalities, including Lexington Legends president Alan Stein. All the signs carry the message: "I recycled today, have you?"
