KY Senate Votes To Double Campaign Contribution Limits

LRC Public Information

Campaign coffers could be filling up a lot faster this year – if the Kentucky House moves on legislation passed out of the Senate Monday. In a 28-8 decision, the upper chamber approved language doubling the amount individuals can give to political candidates in an election cycle from $1,000 to $2,000.

Supporters pointed to the increasing costs of campaigns, while opponents, such as Lexington Sen. Reggie Thomas, voiced concerns that Kentucky is following a worrying trend in Washington.

"If we become like them and we want to pump more money into the political process and poison it more by having the highest bidder come in and decide how they want to run our elections, then it will just be a short time before Frankfort will become just like Washington," he told his colleagues.

The measure now heads to the House, where Democratic Speaker Greg Stumbo has signaled support for the bill.

Josh James fell in love with college radio at Western Kentucky University's student station, New Rock 92 (now Revolution 91.7). After working as a DJ and program director, he knew he wanted to come home to Lexington and try his hand in public radio.
