Ky. Lawmaker Leading Charge To Draft Biden

Legislative Research Commission

Draft Joe! – that’s the message one Kentucky lawmaker wants to send to the national Democratic Party. The vice president has not decided whether to enter the presidential primary, but Louisville Rep. Steve Riggs want to start recruiting supporters in the Commonwealth.

Though Biden has sounded reluctant to step into the fray during appearances on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and elsewhere, Riggs tells cn|2 the VP’s high favorability ratings and wealth of political experience make him an ideal candidate for commander-in-chief. The representative is taking over the Kentucky reins for the Draft Joe Biden Super PAC.

And while Kentucky possesses little pull in the nominating process thanks to a late primary season, the House Local Government Committee chair says it can exercise what muscle it does have.

"So what I think we do out of Kentucky... is that people send money or people speak highly of the candidate that have friends from other states. We get volunteers who go and work on campaigns like this," he tells Pure Politics.

Biden would be the fifth entrant, following former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders, former U.S. Sen. Jim Webb, and Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley.
