KSP Makes Arrest In Fatal Shooting Of Officer
LEBANON, Ky. -- Kentucky State Police have made an arrest in connection with the fatal shooting of a Marion County Sheriff's Deputy. The third uniformed officer to fall in the line of the duty this year.
The incident happened when Marion County Deputy Anthony Rakes pulled over a car after observing it stopped in the roadway at about two A-M Wednesday morning. Rakes was shot during the traffic stop. He died while undergoing surgery at Springview Hospital.
KSP Public Affairs Officer, Billy Gregory, says troopers and Campbellsville Police subsequently arrested 49-year-old Dewayne Shipp, of McDaniel.
“When we found him this morning he had sustained a leg injury and at the hospital in Taylor County he was sent then from there by ambulance to the University hospital in Louisville for a self-inflicted gunshot wound, believed to be from the same weapon he used to shoot officer Rakes", Gregory said.
Deputy Rakes had been with the Marion County Sheriff's Office for six years and served on the Lebanon Police Department prior to becoming a deputy.
Dewayne Shipp has been charged with murder of a police officer.
