Kentucky to Get New Voting Machines

Louisville, KY – Voters in 34 Kentucky counties will cast ballots using a digital scanning device, according to the Kentucky Secretary of State's office.

Secretary of State Spokesperson Les Fugate says some counties asked for the new devices amid voter concerns about problems that occurred in Florida during the 2000 presidential election.

There have never been any major issues with the old machines in Kentucky.

Fugate says the new system is similar to what has been used in Jefferson County for the last 20 years.

Jefferson County uses an optical scanning device to keep records of paper ballots. The new machines use a digital scan of the original paper ballot.

Funding for the machines comes from the federal Help America Vote Act of 2002.
