Kay Optimistic About New Council

With a new year comes new additions to the Lexington Fayette Urban County Council, and Tuesday was their first official work day.   While each of them has varying levels of experience, they are led by veteran councilmember and newly elected Vice Mayor Steve Kay.

Having formerly represented the city at large, Kay succeeds Linda Gorton, who served on the council for 16 years.  When asked about his priorities for the new session, Kay highlighted several  projects introduced last year, such as new offices for homelessness and affordable housing.  His outlook was optimistic.

“Things are really moving forward.  People feel good about being here, and I think it’s an exciting time,” he said.

As for the new members of the council, Kay said their experiences were varied, some having previously worked in city government, while others were brand new.  He said Gray’s reelection, as well as the presence of veteran councilmembers would keep the new session running smoothly.

It’s important, I think, for people to understand that having continuity in the mayor’s office and the administration makes our work altogether, council and administration, a whole lot easier.  We’re not starting from scratch with a new administration so I look for a lot of good things to be done,” he said.

The new council’s first meeting will take place Thursday at 6:00 PM.
