Jefferson County Superintendent To Resign July 1

Dr. Donna Hargens is stepping down from her role as the Jefferson County Public Schools Superintendent.

Media outlets report that on Thursday evening, the Jefferson County Board of Education struck an agreement with Hargens that calls for her to leave her post July 1.

Hargens will continue to receive her $276,000 salary until July 1. JCPS will also put $60,000 toward an investment plan and $48,000 toward health care coverage.

The district didn't give an official reason for Hargens' removal. However, Board Chair Chris Brady says the district is trying to "accelerate the pace of achievement" faster than Hargens could allow.

Hargens' relationship with the board has been tense in recent years, especially following the Kentucky Department of Education's February announcement that it was launching a management audit of JCPS.
