Japanese electric wiring company Sumitomo has mapped out plans to expand its presence in Lexington.

Officials are cheering the automotive wiring manufacturer’s decision to invest another $8.5 million into its local facilities. At Monday’s unveiling, Gov. Beshear said Sumitomo considered shifting operations away from Kentucky, but tax incentives and other state and local efforts to retain business helped convince them to stay put.

“Sumitomo expanding here in Lexington means more jobs for Kentuckians, a broadening of our economy, and building on this incredible momentum that Kentucky already has when it comes to job creation," the governor said.

New jobs from this project, however, will number only ten, but the 440,000 square foot facility off Remington Way will be the company’s largest warehouse.

Sumitomo expects to consolidate its current operations and move its 28 current employees to the new site by the end of the year.
