Jacobson Park Playground Enthusiasts To Sound Off On Renovation Plans

Lexington Parks and Recreation officials will hold the first public meeting to gather input on Jacobson Park renovation plans Thursday.

Attendees at Thursday night’s meeting will hear a presentation of possible options for the more than 20-year-old playground and get a chance to offer their comments.

"What we have always intended on doing was to get as much community input as we can. We want to know what the people would like to see there. Our focus is always going to be on safety," says Lexington Parks and Rec director Brad Chambers.

But a sizeable number of local parents argue the move toward replacement threatens to alter the creative character of playground, which is made up of labyrinthine wooden passageways, chutes, and castle-like turrets. A Facebook group dubbed “Save Jacobson Park Playground” has already attracted over 750 members.

City officials say it’s possible a new playground could keep the same look and scale, but they would like to see equipment that meets modern safety standards.

The meeting will be held Thursday night at 6:00 at Southland Christian Church.
