An attorney says the wife of the alleged leader of a bourbon theft ring in Kentucky was unaware of the whiskey barrels found on her property that unraveled the scheme.

Gilbert "Toby" Curtsinger, the distillery worker targeted by authorities as the ringleader, was in court Friday along with his wife, Julie. They pleaded not guilty to multiple charges.

Julie Curtsinger's attorney, Kevin Fox, told reporters his client was unaware of several barrels authorities found behind a shed on the Curtsingers' property.

Gilbert Curtsinger's attorney, Whitney True Lawson, said in court she has concerns about her client's ability to get a fair trial due to publicity surrounding the case.

Authorities say the thefts targeted the Buffalo Trace and Wild Turkey distilleries and included such prestigious brands as Pappy Van Winkle bourbon.
