Hero Remembered Through Giving

Karyn Czar @ WUKY

Kindness was a word used more than any other to describe Richmond Police Officer Daniel Ellis yesterday at his funeral.  Kindness is what friends and strangers continue to show in memory of the fallen officer.

Kim Pope's husband is a police officer at the University of Kentucky, she and other volunteers with 'Wives Behind the Badge' spent Wednesday making sure first responders from across the state were getting fed.  "We are handing out treats and snacks and drinks that have been donated by the community and all over Central Kentucky.  Farther than Nicholasville and Lexington.  People have reached out from all over so these are donated snacks from citizens and businesses from all over that we're trying to get on  all these cruisers"

'Random acts of kindness' in Officer Ellis' name have become somewhat of a movement in Richmond where Ellis served with the RPD for seven years.  A local hardware store gave away free blue light bulbs and many residents say they'll keep them shining, a local priest passed out gift certificates to any officer that crossed his path and patrons at a local coffee shop have bought cups of brew for strangers in line.  Kim Pope said she hopes the spirit of giving in Officer Ellis' name continues.
