FRANKFORT, Ky. -- – The Kentucky House has taken a step to help keep guns out of the hands of certain mentally ill individuals. The House passed the measure late Monday afternoon. Nicholasville Representative Bob Damron says it pertains to those people involuntarily committed to a mental institution.
"It will ensure that when somebody is ruled mentally incompetent by a court that it would then get to the federal background check and it would prohibit them from purchasing a firearm."
Individuals who have been successfully treated for a mental illness could petition the court to regain their right to purchase a gun. Damron is confident the bill will pass the Kentucky Senate.
