Call it a little hometown flavor – literally, that is. Wednesday, Lexington bakers took part in the Great American Pie Contest.
A long line of hungry visitors waited at Cheapside Pavilion as the winners were announced. This year, the contestant to beat was Jessica Dooley, who won top honors in two of the three categories in 2013.
This year, her recipes successfully tickled judges’ taste buds a second time. She took home another two trophies – one for her homemade flour apple pie and again for prettiest pie.
She says the trick is running her own taste tests.
"A lot of trial and error and a lot of testing out on my family. They never argue, so I think they enjoy the task," she says.
Well, there might be one more secret.
"I always use my grandmother's made-from-scratch pie crust recipe. It's in her handwriting, I keep it in my recipe box, and it's my go to recipe for that," she explains.
Fourth of July festivities continue on Thursday with the annual Patriotic Concert at Transylvania University and a street fair all day Friday on Main Street, capped off with a fireworks show at 10 downtown.
