Grant Helps FCPS Buy More Robot Kits
LEXINGTON, Ky. - Fayette County Public Schools will soon have more than 100 robotics kits in its elementary schools thanks to a grant from Xerox. The company donated $35,000 Monday through a fundraising effort spearheaded by IEEE, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.
“These are mainly Legos, but they do have some wires,” says 11-year-old Matthew Goodrich, a 5th grader at Garden Springs Elementary.
Garden Springs has been using the Lego robot kits for the past few years and even has a robotics team. After taking several calculations and some trial and error, students are able to manipulate the robot around a small course.
Teacher Mary Maldonado says the robots help students who weren’t interested in math understand more advanced skills.
“They absolutely love it. I had a student that told me the other day, she said, ‘I love doing the robots because I don’t even know that we’re learning.”
FCPS expects the robotics kits to be in place at all 34 of its elementary schools within the next month.
