Lexington, KY – Lexington fire and police departments received almost one-million dollars in Homeland Security grants, including $600-thousand dollars for a hazardous materials response unit. Beshear says the grants will help first responders to be better trained and better equipped for most any disaster scenario.
Beshear says the grant will allow the HAZMAT unit to be fully operational by the year 20-10, when thousands descend upon Kentucky for the World Equestrian Games to be held in Lexington. Additional grants totaling $373-thousand dollars will go to the city's Bomb Response Team for equipment purchases and upgrades.
