God's Pantry Thanksgiving Operation Requires Crew Of Hundreds

The “Sharing Thanksgiving” event is one of the largest food distribution efforts God’s Pantry undertakes each year – and 2014 is no different.

Volunteers shuttle shopping carts packed with turkey, eggs, potatoes, and onions across the parking lot at Broadway Christian Church. Senior Pastor Ernie Perry smiles, watching the meals land in the hands of low-income Lexingtonians.

"It gets better every year hopefully," he says. "And if you go down in Fellowship Hall you'll see how they're going through lines like they're lined up to get on a ride at King's Island. We try to get them indoors as soon as we can, keep them warm, give them some hot chocolate, but it takes about 200 volunteers to work this for the two days."

It’s no small effort – as the operation is repeated with another 200 volunteers at St. Luke United Methodist Church.  In all God’s Pantry hopes to feed more than 5,000 families.

A Feeding America study showed that food insecurity is a problem for roughly one in seven people in Fayette County.

Josh James fell in love with college radio at Western Kentucky University's student station, New Rock 92 (now Revolution 91.7). After working as a DJ and program director, he knew he wanted to come home to Lexington and try his hand in public radio.
