Ft. Knox Commander: bin Laden's Death a Closure for Some

By Lisa Autry, Kentucky Public Radio

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – He doubted whether the day would ever come, but a battalion commander from Fort Knox says the death of Osama bin Laden provides the closure that so many Americans needed.

Speaking by phone from Afghanistan, Lieutenant Colonel James Vizzard said it's a welcome milestone ten years after 9/11.

"There were a lot of people who needed to see this particular event closed. It would have been terrible if he had simply died in a cave somewhere and we'd never known about it. So it's very good that it's as clear as it could possibly get."

The response from U.S. forces in Afghanistan has been tempered by the start of the summer fighting season. Many of the insurgents who left for the winter have returned and are responsible for a major uptick in civilian deaths.

Commander Vizzard calls bin Laden's death just one moment in a larger struggle.
