Frankfort's Police Chief Resigns

The head of Frankfort’s police department is stepping down.

Monday, Frankfort Police Chief Jeff Abrams announced would be retiring effective this Friday. Abrams said the ailing pension system played a role in his decision. He told the State Journal “For me, I’m 43 years old. Even if I worked, I wouldn’t have those benefits come in for another 10 years.”

A new proposal would raise the retirement age to 60 for law enforcement, instead of 25 years of service. Abrams said it’s a difficult job and to force someone to stay in such a high stress situation until they are 60 is “a danger to society.”

Three other high ranking member of the Frankfort Police Department have also retired or announced their retirement because of possible pension changes.

An interim police chief will be named Wednesday.
