Lexington’s food truck pilot program won an extension Thursday as the Urban County Council voted to continue the effort through the end of the year.
The six month pilot project allowing food trucks in half a dozen downtown zones began last June. The council then pushed the end date to March. Now, after reviewing the results and hearing no testimony from brick-and-mortar restaurants against the program in February, members have granted another extension.
The Lexington Herald-Leader reports only four food trucks took part in the program during 2013 because the program began in the middle of many food truck vendors’ seasons.
Food trucks are only allowed to set up shop in metered spaces for two hours during lunch – a window that many vendors say is too short for them to set up, serve, and tear down.
