LEXINGTON, Ky. – Friends and relatives of Flight 5191 victims gathered with state and local leaders Friday to mark the four year anniversary of the Lexington plane crash.

Four years ago, Castella Washington learned that her sister, Priscilla Johnson, and JoAnn Wright, a cousin, were among the victims in the crash of Comair Flight 5191. Friday morning at Lexington's arboretum, she helped turned the turn dirt in a groundbreaking ceremony for a public memorial.

"It's been a great loss to our family, but with God's grace we've made it through. And that was very nice, and I just felt like I could feel their spirits here watching over us."

To honor the 49 lives lost on August 27, 2006, a memorial group has commissioned Kentucky artist Douwe Blumberg to create a sculpture featuring 49 silver birds.

"Hearing the names read, to me, was extremely touching, to put a face to what I'm doing or to each bird."

Blumberg says getting the piece ready by next year's anniversary will be a challenge not only does the 17-foot sculpture need to be built, but the soil must be tested to make sure the ground can support its weight.

Fundraising for the $350,000 project is on track. Governor Steve Beshear has pledged $100,000 in state aviation funds, and Lexington Mayor Jim Newberry is asking the Urban County Council to approve a $25,000 contribution.

People interested in donating may send their checks, made out to Flight 5191 Memorial Commission, to the Bluegrass Community Foundation, 250 W. Main St., Suite 1220, Lexington, 40507. Donations are also accepted on-line. Go to www.bgcf.org and click on "donate now."
