Fire Chief's Disability Request Remains in Limbo

By Brenna Angel

LEXINGTON, Ky. – A disability retirement request made by Lexington Fire Chief Bob Hendricks will remain pending for at least another month. The police and fire pension board voted Wednesday to have Hendricks' claim reviewed by a third medical expert.

"Generally when there's some level of difference in the opinion of two doctors, then the board will elect to send someone out to a third doctor."

Police Chief Ronnie Bastin, who is a pension board member, says it's not unusual to seek a third opinion. Due to patient privacy, the nature of Hendricks' injury has not been revealed.

The embattled fire chief made his disability retirement request in May, two months after Mayor Jim Gray called for Hendricks to resign due to poor leadership and budget management.

A formal process of removing him from office is on hold because of the disability claim. In the mean time, Hendricks remains on paid leave.
