FCPS Holds 2nd Public Listening Session on Redistricting

Chase Cavanaugh

School rezoning was the subject of a meeting Tuesday night for Fayette County Public Schools.

At Millcreek Elementary School, FCPS held another listening session regarding school districts.   Members of the redistricting committee presented draft plans for new elementary, middle, and high school borders.  Similar to the February 12th meeting at Bryan Station, they took feedback from over a hundred parents and neighbors, which ranged from questions about the factors used to move students around to specific disputes about new boundaries.  While the dialog was appreciated, some parents, including Bryan Rosier of Stuart Hall, thought the group was still too insular.

“They didn’t go to the community and ask the community what should the guiding principles be for this redistricting process, and I think that’s why there’s so much pushback and so much anger among the parents,” he said.

These principles include reducing overcrowding as well as balancing out the amount of  students on free and reduced lunch plans.   The committee hopes to have a final recommendation by mid-April, but according to members, the new districts wouldn’t take effect until 2016, when new elementary and high schools are constructed.   More information on the plans can be found at fcps.net/zones.
