A proposal to outsource some janitorial jobs at the Fayette County Public School’s main office has been dropped following pushback from staff.
The district employed six custodians at its main office in 2013, but with three of those positions currently open, FCPS superintendent Tom Shelton says a proposal was developed that would have farmed those responsibilities out to an outside overnight cleaning service.
But Shelton says when word got out a number of custodial employees became concerned.
"A lot of staff members... believed that that was going to potentially lead to outsourcing of custodial services and maintenance jobs, although that was not the intent and had never been planned. And so it became quite a distraction," he tells WUKY.
The board was slated to consider the pilot program at a meeting Monday.
Officials estimated it would have saved the district about $1,000 on the custodial work, but Shelton says the plan was beginning to present a hindrance to progress in the district.
