Fayette School Board Reviews Audit

The results of a recent state audit of the Fayette school district’s finances were on the agenda at a school board meeting Monday night.

Though the audit found no criminal wrongdoing, outlined numerous areas of concern remain. State Auditor Adam Edelen identified chronic financial mismanagement, salary disparities, and a lack of communication between departments as the main issues plaguing the district.

Monday, the school board met to explore the findings and craft plans to address them. District Superintendent Tom Shelton told WKYT-TV the issue now is "...how we improve. How can we improve working relationships, the flow of information and communication."

Shelton has come under fire from some members of the board for his management style leading up the audit, but the superintendent has pledged to take a comprehensive approach to solving the problems.

Much of this week’s meeting dealt with one audit finding Shelton is disputing – namely, that administrator raises have outpaced teacher raises. He argues Edelen’s conclusions were incorrect and that a detailed examination of salary information will bear that out.
