Fallen Richmond Officer Being Honored In DC

10tv.com

Officers from the Berea Police Department are patrolling Richmond today.  They’re filling in so that nearly two dozen officers from the Richmond Police Department could be a part of a ceremony that’s honoring one of their own who was killed in the line of duty.

Last fall, the call went out that no emergency dispatch wants to send…officer down.  Officer Daniel Ellis had been shot while he was investigating a robbery.  He died two days later.  Today his name is being unveiled during a ceremony at the National Law Enforcement Officer’s Memorial in Washington D.C.  Lt. Jake Reed with Berea Police is one of several officers helping cover shifts in Richmond so that police there could attend the event.  “We’re all a family and we’re a close knit family in Madison County.  We work so close together all the time anyways, between us, and the sheriff’s department and Richmond Police.  So it was an easy decision for us to help them out and I know they would do the same for us”

Reed told WKYT it's a special, and emotional, moment for the brothers in blue and that’s why Berea police wanted to step in and patrol Richmond at no cost to the Richmond Police Department.

The Madison County Sheriff's Office and EKU police are also filling in this weekend.
