The Fayette County Public Schools’ Equity Council is pressing the school board to move forward with guidelines aimed at closing achievement gaps.
Equity Council chair Roy Woods voiced the group’s growing frustration with the lack of action on the council’s recommendations to combat achievement gaps for black, low-income, Hispanic, and disabled students Monday.
Woods told the board that, with gaps widening in the district in recent years, the time for studying the programs and initiatives is over. The council’s top priority: more support for students with mental health issues. The Lexington Herald-Leader reports that could involve creating a single building to focus on those students, perhaps even repurposing the district’s Main Office and moving operations to another facility.
Other recommendations include bringing in more diverse school staff and improving accountability measures for schools with the largest gaps.
Board chair John Price said each of the recommendations will have a date of implementation attached.
