Environmental Protesters Staging Sit-In Outside Beshear's Office

By Alan Lytle

Frankfort, KY – About a dozen environmental activists, including reportedly, Kentucky author Wendell Berry, are staging a sit-in just outside of Governor Beshear's office. They are protesting mountain top removal coal mining in advance of planned rally in Frankfort on Monday. A spokesperson in the governor's office says Beshear planned to send someone over to talk to them but that he would not. Kentucky author Silas House told a reporter from WKYT television the group expected to be taken away in handcuffs if necessary.

"These residents are going to stay in the governor's office until he speaks with them or has them removed. They are prepared to be arrested. What they would prefer is that the governor would sit down and have a conversation with them."

The annual "I love Mountains Day" event this year will include speeches from noted Kentucky author Silas House, and Third District U.S. Representative John Yarmuth of Louisville.
