LEXINGTON, Ky. – A structural engineer spent most of Monday morning at the corner of Vine Street and Hernando Alley in Lexington, trying to determine what caused a piece of concrete to fall from the Phoenix parking garage Sunday night. A 28-foot slab fell from the 2nd level of the garage, which is owned by the city.

Parking garage manager Tom Wilson says about 80 city employees will now have to park at other facilities until repairs are made. The Phoenix was last inspected in 2007.

"In a normal budget cycle we'll put evaluations in, but there's no set time where you do it every three years or every five years that I'm aware of."

It's not clear how much repairs will cost the city of Lexington. Council members are currently developing a budget for the fiscal year that begins July 1.

Wilson calls it a blessing that no one was hurt in the incident. Five years ago a pregnant woman was killed in Lexington by a piece of concrete that fell from the Chase Bank parking garage.
