Empty Bowls Go Fast, Benefit Hunger-Fighting in Lexington

By Brenna Angel

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The bowls were empty, but they went fast Monday afternoon at Transylvania University's Morlan Gallery. More than 500 pieces of pottery went up for sale as part of the Empty Bowls Project.

"Artists make and donate bowls, which are then sold to the public. They're soup bowls, they're ten dollars each, and then all those profits are given to a charity whose mission is to feed the local hungry. This year we are partnering with Catholic Action Center, so all of our funds will go to them," says Morlan Gallery Director Andrea Fisher.

Fisher says the program has grown quite popular, with patrons waiting outside the door for the sale to start. The December fundraiser, which is held every other year, benefits local charities fighting hunger. In 2008, 600 bowls were sold within two hours.

"With the economy, I think everyone is sort of thinking simple, and 'how do I benefit someone else?' These are hand-made objects. They're gorgeous. I mean, it's beautiful to be here and I think people really get caught up in the moment. And they give a functional and beautiful gift."

This year proceeds from the Empty Bowls Project will benefit the Catholic Action Center. Over the past ten years, the Empty Bowls project at Transy has raised $31,000 dollars for Lexington charities.
