Downtown Driver's License Office Moves To New Location

If you’re looking to acquire or renew your driver’s license in Lexington, you’ll find one of the city’s two offices has moved.

Fayette Circuit Court Clerk Vince Riggs says the community made it clear that the downtown Driver’s License Office had outlived its usefulness via emails and letters "complaining and having concerns about the space and being able to get in."

With that office at 162 W. Main Street becoming cramped, he says it made sense to move the operation to the Village East Shopping Center on Winchester Road. In addition to added space, the location also offers easier access and parking.

While most states house all driver-related functions under one roof, a Division of Motor Vehicles or DMV, Kentucky splits the duties between the Circuit Court Clerks, the state Transportation Cabinet, and the Kentucky State Police.

The new facility, which opened Monday, will be a one-stop shop for residents seeking driver’s licenses, state ID cards, and driver’s tests.
