Double Crossover Diamond Recognized For Innovation
LEXINGTON, Ky. - Lexington’s double-crossover diamond on Harrodsburg Road has won an America’s Transportation Award. The interchange has decreased congestion since it opened last fall.
The construction, which eliminated left turns across traffic, is the first of its kind in Kentucky and one of only six in the country. Now, less than a year after its debut, the US 68 double-crossover diamond is being recognized for best use of innovation in a small project. Transportation Cabinet spokesperson Natasha Lacy says the decision to employ the rare design has paid off by nearly halving the number of crashes.
"This of course was one of Lexington's busiest, crash-plagued interchanges and our current statistics show that our reduction is at 42 percent," she says.
Lacy says other intersections in Lexington are being considered as candidates for similar interchanges. Meanwhile, planners are already working on designs for two other areas elsewhere in the state.
