A documentary exploring the life of Kentucky civil rights pioneer Anne Braden is coming to the University of Kentucky Thursday night.
"It's that assumption that is so embedded in you that you don't realize it's there, that your crowd is supposed to be running things," Braden says in the film's trailer.
The in-depth portrait, co-crafted by filmmaker Mimi Pickering, tracks the life of the progressive white activist who was charged with sedition in 1954 for trying to desegregate a Louisville neighborhood. Braden continued her work on behalf of civil rights causes until her death in 2006.
"Her story just goes so deep into what the Civil Rights Movement, and really what folks are calling now the Long Civil Rights Movement, recognizing that it started hundreds of years ago and it continues today. And it involves peace, environment, gender equality, justice, all these issues intersecting it," Pickering says.
The filmmaker will be on hand to discuss Anne Braden: Southern Patriot after the screening tonight at 7:30 at UK’s Memorial Hall.
