The Lexington Urban County Council is putting new design standards for downtown construction on hold.
Efforts to increase city oversight of new construction downtown have been on the back burner for years. Tuesday, the council axed a proposal that would have required developers receiving city money to seek city approval for their building designs – and make demolition permits subject to city planning board review.
The Lexington Herald-leader reports that, despite giving the issue a thorough examination, some council members remained hesitant to sign on to additional requirements for builders.
Proposal for design standards first surfaced in the wake of the demolition of a block of buildings to make room for the long-stalled CentrePointe project.
