Council To Discuss Fire Station Closure

By weku staff

Lexington, KY – Lexington Mayor Jim Newberry stands by his decision to close certain city fire stations for limited periods of time to reduce overtime expenses. Firehouse Four on Jefferson Sstreet was closed for a 24 hour period over the weekend. Newberry says officials in Columbus, Ohio raised taxes to avoid laying off firefighters while government leaders in Cincinnati are trying to lay off 47 firefighters. He says officials in Harrodsburg went through a similar process recently to reduce staffing. Members of the urban county council will hold a special meeting Tuesday to discuss fire reduction plans.
