Convention Center Expansion Underway In Lexington

City leaders have broken ground on the expansion of the Lexington Convention Center, home to Rupp Arena.  At a ceremony on Thursday in front of Heritage Hall, Lexington Mayor Jim Gray described the project as transformational.

Also on hand for the beginning of construction were leaders from the state and the University of Kentucky.

The three-year $241 million project will begin in August and finish in late 2021.  It will be built in phases to allow Rupp Arena and much of the existing convention center to remain in operation.

When completed the expanded convention center will feature 100,000 square feet of exhibit halls and a new ballroom.
