Conference To Address Green Issues In Kentucky

Green will be the dominant color and theme at a conference Thursday at the Marriott Griffin Gate Hotel in Lexington.

Sustainability is a common catch-all word for people, business organizations and institutions pursuing more earth-friendly policies and practices, but what does that exactly entail?  That’s a key question to be addressed at a conference Thursday at the Marriott Griffin Gate hotel.  Spokesman Bobby Clark says the Bluegrass Forever Green Summit will gather those in the know, as well as those who want to know more about sustainability in Kentucky.

“Kentucky has been blessed with the opportunity to have very low energy costs over the years.  If you’re out in California or New York, you’ve already done everything you can to seal your house and do energy efficiency but because our electric rates have been so low you just haven’t see that.  But that’s going to change.  Over the next five to ten years people are expecting electric rates to double.   Can you imagine in your business or your home seeing your bill double?  So we need to do things now that are going to conserve our limited natural resources on our planet.”

Clark says participants and stakeholders will run the gamut.

“City and county planners, elected officials, greenspace and parks commissioners, sustainability coordinators, a lot of companies are beginning to see the importance of sustainability and are designating directors.  Our higher education institutions are also very active in sustainability, (as are) solid waste professionals, and water and conservation folks.   We want to talk about local foods and agriculture that’s going on.  Planning…how do we look at the transportation needs of this 21st century that we’re in?   So we expect a broad range and would like to invite the public.”
