Community Gathers To Discuss Safety At Fayette County Schools

School officials address safety concerns and changes that will be made at Fayette County’s public high schools after weapons were found on students at Tates Creek High School.

Parents and members of the community gathered at the school’s library Wednesday night to hear about new security measures. Fayette County Schools Superintendent Manny Caulk told parents the biggest changes will be metal detectors and wands that will be used for random security checks at all Lexington high schools. Tates Creek High School Principal Sam Meaux also addressed parents saying “I have been in Tates Creek now for 27-years and it’s very personal to me so every time…I don’t want a gun in Tates Creek High School. You know what, they’re your biological children but ya’ll think we love em (sic)? I looked at different ones and my heart just hurts.”

The meeting was held over concerns about how guns got on campus at Tates Creek. Three students were found with guns over a 12-day period. Principal Meaux said “We’ve had to address ourselves too. We’ve become lax with hall passes. Safest place your child can be is in class where they’re supposed to be when they’re supposed to be there.”

Random metal detector searches could begin as early as next week.
