Coming Downtown This Weekend? City Says Plan Ahead, Pack Some Patience

There is so much happening in downtown Lexington this weekend that residents and visitors are advised not to count on “the luck of the Irish” to find parking, but should plan to arrive early and carpool if possible. Especially on Saturday, March 11th, as thousands of people are expected to come downtown to attend multiple events taking place at the Lexington Convention Center, Rupp Arena, the Lexington Opera House and throughout downtown Lexington.Activities start in the morning with the 8 am Shamrock Shuffle 3K, followed by the St. Patrick’s Day Parade at 1 p.m. In addition to the city-planned festivities, the following events are scheduled to take place at Lexington Center venues:

  • Approximately 14,000 people are expected Saturdayat the Lexington Comic and Toy Convention (Comic Con), taking place at the Lexington Convention Center. The event is open to the public throughout the weekend. Event times are; Friday, 4 p.m. – 9 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
  • Winter Jam, a contemporary Christian concert, with a projected attendance of 12,000 – 15,000 will occur on Saturday evening. The doors will open at 5:00 p.m. and the concert will begin at 6:00 p.m.
  • The Lexington Opera House will host multiple performances of Scapa Dance. The first show will be Friday night at 7:30 p.m. followed by two performances on Saturdayat 2:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.  

According to Bill Owen, President and CEO of Lexington Center, “People should plan to arrive early and allow extra time to find a parking spot.  We expect the parking lots around Rupp Arena to fill up very early in the day on Saturday.
