City, UK Consider Path Forward On Rupp Arena

The two sides caught up in the Rupp Arena controversy will meet this week to discuss a way forward.

For some observers, last month’s scathing letter from UK president Eli Capilouto to Lexington Convention Center chair Brent Rice indicating a lack of support for the Rupp expansion signaled the death knell for the $350M project.

But Governor Steve Beshear, a supporter, says he’s working to keep the wheels in motion by bringing the university and the city back to the table.

"It takes both partners, UK and the city, to agree upon how extensive a renovation Rupp is going to get, what they're going to do down there, for us to move forward. So I'm getting those partners together and they're going to have to work through those details," Beshear told reporters Monday.

Beshear says he’s confident both sides want to come to agreement on the project, but declined to speculate on what shape it might take.

Capilouto will meet with Mayor Jim Gray this Thursday.

Josh James fell in love with college radio at Western Kentucky University's student station, New Rock 92 (now Revolution 91.7). After working as a DJ and program director, he knew he wanted to come home to Lexington and try his hand in public radio.
