Chemical Spill Shuts Down Part Of I-75 In Madison County

A section of Interstate 75 in Madison County has been shut down because of a chemical spill, prompting lanes in both directions to be closed.

Kentucky State Police told WKYT-TV in Lexington that ferric chloride solution spilled at mile marker 96 in the northbound lanes at about 10 a.m. Tuesday.

Troopers have shut down the interstate from northbound exit 90 to southbound exit 97 for a yet-to-be determined amount of time.

Troopers say one officer has been taken to the hospital, but his condition was not immediately available. Troopers say they don't know what led to the leak.

Ferric chloride is also known as iron chloride. It's mainly used to remove impurities in water and for wastewater treatment.

Traffic is being rerouted onto U.S. Highway 25.
